ABSTRACT

Few reports describing an association between UV radiation and fixed skin eruptions have been published since 1975. These reactions have received various names, including fixed sunlight eruption, fixed exanthema due to UV radiation, and broad-spectrum abnormal localized photosensitivity syndrome. We present a series of 13 patients (4 men [30.8%] and 9 women [69.2%]) aged between 28 and 56 years who were evaluated for fixed eruptions induced by UV radiation at a dermatology referral hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. The lesions were located on the inner thighs, buttocks, popliteal region, anterior and posterior axilla, and dorsum of the feet. Photoprovocation reproduced lesions in all the affected areas, and histopathology showed changes similar to those seen in fixed drug eruptions. While these UV-provoked reactions may be a type of fixed skin eruption, we cannot rule out that they may also be a distinct condition that simply shares a pathogenic mechanism with fixed eruptions.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Brazil, especially in the South region. Despite its high prevalence, it is a potentially preventable comorbidity with sun protection measures. Objective: To analyze photoprotection habits in patients in primary care. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach and analytical-descriptive purposes, with a sample of 374 patients over 18 years old, selected from a primary health unit in the South region of Brazil. As instruments, the Sun Exposure Protection Index questionnaire and a sociodemographic questionnaire formulated for this study were used. Results: It was found that a large portion of patients are at high risk in relation to sun exposure. Nearly half do not use sunscreen, and most do not use physical barrier methods to protect themselves from the sun. The risk resulting from sun exposure was higher in men (p=0.007), in people with darker skin tone (p=0.033) and in individuals with less education (p=0.037). The propensity to improve photoprotection habits was lower in people with darker skin (p=0.010) and in individuals with less education (p=0.019). In general, it was found that the greater the risk of the individual, the worse the propensity to reduce it with photoprotection measures (p<0.001). Conclusions: A large portion of patients are at high risk in relation to sun exposure. It is up to health professionals to promote awareness of the risks of inadvertent exposure to the sun and guide healthy behaviors in photoprotection.

ABSTRACT

Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) trees have a wide distribution in the Cerrado, and it is protected by federal laws. The need to monitor and understand pest damage to crops and forests is a major motivation for the study of population distribution. The mites (Acari) population distributions on C. brasiliense are unknown. We studied seasonal mite population distribution and their ecological indices on C. brasiliense trees in Cerrado areas during three years. Greatest number of Agistemus sp. (Stigmaeidae), Histiostoma sp. (Histiostomidae), Proctolaelaps sp. (Ascidae), and diversity and species richness on leaves of C. brasiliense occurred in the autumn; Tetranychus sp.1 (Tetranychidae) on leaves in the autumn and winter; Histiostoma sp., and Proctolaelaps sp. in fruits in the summer. No significant effect of season was observed in the abundance of Eutetranychus sp., Tetranychus sp.2 (Tetranychidae) and Acaridae. The populations of Acaridae, Eutetranychus sp., Proctolaelaps sp. and Tetranychus sp.1 negatively correlated with temperature. Proctolaelaps sp. and Tetranychus sp.1 correlated negatively with rainfall and Eutetranychus sp. and Proctolaelaps sp. positively with sunlight. The period with low rainfall and relative humidity increases the phytophagous mites and their predators, especially Agistemus sp.. The Tetranychus sp. And Histiostoma sp. species may become pests in C. brasiliense in the Cerrado domain.

As árvores Caryocar brasiliense Camb.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Evaluate the association between risk factors in pediatric myopic patients. Methods: A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the risk factors associated to myopia in patients attending the Pediatric Ophthalmology Service at Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. The sample was 263 patients (123 cases and 140 controls) who met the inclusion criteria. The study variables were age, sex, skin color, place of residence, low birth weight, prematurity, smoking mothers, a family history of refractive defects, screen time, sun exposure hours and axial length. Results: A correlation was found between a family history of refractive defects and the presence of myopia (p = 0.009), as well as a 1.9 risk of developing the disorder. More than two screen hours were associated to myopic patients (p = 0.003), doubling the risk. More than two sun exposure hours were more frequent among controls (p = 0.004) and constitute a protection factor. Axial lengths were greater among myopics (p = 0.000). Exposure and screen time were correlated with greater axial length. Conclusions: A family history of refractive defects increases the risk for myopia 1.9 times, exposure to screens for more than two hours per day doubles it, and the same number of sun exposure hours reduces it to half. Axial length is greater among myopics and screen exposed people(AU)

ABSTRACT

Scalp seborrheic dermatitis, or dandruff, is thought to worsen during the winter when there is later sunrise and less daylight. This study investigates trends in search engine interest for the term "dandruff" as they relate to changes in daylight, sunrise, and seasonality. We investigated the search interest in several countries of varying latitudes over a five-year period, and we explore the effect of daylight saving time on disease interest within two cities in the United States. We discuss our findings in the context of hormonal changes and skincare/behavior

ABSTRACT

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which has the regulation of calcium-phosphorus metabolism in the body as its main function. Vitamin D receptor is present in most of the nucleated cells of the body, and its role in multiple body processes is being discovered. The 3 main sources of vitamin D are ultraviolet sun radiation, diet, and supplementation. The skin, through solar radiation, provides 90% of the bodýs vitamin D needs. In cases of low vitamin D, sun exposure habits and diet must be reviewed, and pharmacological supplementation must be assessed. Measurement in the body is performed by determining 25-hydroxycholecalciferol with values below 20ng/ml being considered insufficient. Universal screening of vitamin D is not currently recommended, only in situations where a deficiency is suspected.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Photoprotection is indicated to reduce the exposure to cutaneous actinic damage and it is important to prevent skin cancer. The face is the most irradiated area of the body and is also where skin cancers most commonly occur. Objective: To evaluate the amount of sunscreen applied and its facial coverage in patients previously diagnosed with skin cancer, treated at a Brazilian public institution. Methods: Quasi-experimental study involving 40 patients undergoing skin cancer follow-up. Participants were asked to apply sunscreen on their face, as usual, and the mass used was measured. After, participants were photographed under Wood's light to evaluate the homogeneity of the sunscreen´s coverage, and facial sunscreen coverage failure. Results: Fourteen (35%) participants applied an estimated amount lower than recommended (2mg/cm2). The regions with smallest coverage were the ears and the "H" area of the face. Conclusions: The insufficient or heterogeneous sunscreen application on face, neck and ears may promote a false perception of protection, leading to irresponsible exposure. As the population ages and the incidence of skin cancers increases, it is essential to stimulate photoprotection, with appropriate information, especially among high-risk individuals

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Almeria is a region in southeast Spain with optimal sunlight levels, along with low pluvial and pollution rates. If exposure to sunlight is sufficient to maintain adequate levels of vitamin D (25OHD), this population should display high serum levels. OBJECTIVES: To describe 25OHD serum status in women from Almeria and evaluate the impact of long sunlight exposure along the seasons on 25OHD. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, performed in women consecutively recruited from an outpatient rheumatology clinic. Serum levels of 25OHD were assessed in all patients and evaluated according to age (<48 yrs, 48-53 yrs, 54-60 yrs and >60 yrs), season, and presence or absence of menopause. Clinical and laboratory variables that could affect status of vitamin D were also considered. RESULTS: The sample included 319 Caucasian female patients. Mean 25OHD were 30.2ng/ml with 195 (61.1%) exhibiting 25OHD inadequate serum levels. Season had a significant effect on 25OHD levels, with autumn being the season in which 25OHD serum levels remained well above 30ng/ml in all age bands, and winter the season with more levels of insufficiency. Menopause did not modify 25OH serum levels. Women whose age was below 48 and over 60 had inadequate levels of 25OHD during summer. CONCLUSIONS: Optimal levels of sunlight could not overcome the problem of inadequate 25OHD serum levels, particularly in elderly and young female population. Vitamin D supplementation may be recommended predominantly in winter and summer in this population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To verify whether infants with cow's milk protein allergy have inadequate vitamin D levels. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 120 children aged 2 years or younger, one group with cow's milk protein allergy and a control group. The children were recruited at the pediatric gastroenterology, allergology, and pediatric outpatient clinics of a university hospital in the Northeast of Brazil. A questionnaire was administered to the caregiver and blood samples were collected for vitamin D quantification. Vitamin D levels <30 ng/mL were considered inadequate. Vitamin D level was expressed as mean and standard deviation, and the frequency of the degrees of sufficiency and other variables, as proportions. Results: Infants with cow's milk protein allergy had lower mean vitamin D levels (30.93 vs.35.29 ng/mL; p = 0.041) and higher deficiency frequency (20.3% vs.8.2; p = 0.049) than the healthy controls. Exclusively or predominantly breastfed infants with cow's milk protein allergy had higher frequency of inadequate vitamin D levels (p = 0.002). Regardless of sun exposure time, the groups had similar frequencies of inadequate vitamin D levels (p = 0.972). Conclusions: Lower vitamin D levels were found in infants with CMPA, especially those who were exclusively or predominantly breastfed, making these infants a possible risk group for vitamin D deficiency.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the compatibility of the Metarhizium anisopliae JAB 68 isolate with liposoluble photoprotectants and the photoprotection conferred to its conidia. The fungus was cultivated in a medium with the photoprotectants Neo Heliopan® BB, Neo Heliopan® E 1000, Eusolex® 6007 and Neo Heliopan® AV in various concentrations. Vegetative growth, sporulation and germination were assessed to determine compatibility. Then, conidia were suspended in oil containing the compatible photoprotectants, in their respective concentrations, and exposed to 0-7 hours of light from a solar simulator operating at 1,000 W m-2. Neo Heliopan BB® and Neo Heliopan® E 1000 were compatible with M. anisopliae at 2% and 1%, respectively. Eusolex® 6007 and Neo Heliopan® AV were compatible up to 8% a 7%, respectively. Conidia exposed to radiation from the solar simulator, with photoprotectant-free oil as its carrier, presented germination of 78.12% after five hours. When adding any photoprotectant to the conidia oily suspension, the germination percentage was always higher than that obtained in the control. Neo Heliopan® BB at 1 and 2% and Neo Heliopan® AV at 0.5% increased the germination. After 7 hours of exposure the germination percentages were 93.77, 94.55 and 98.82%, respectively. Eusolex® 6007 was not as efficient as previous products, but in the same exposure period was able to protect the conidia (88.60% germination) when used at a 1% concentration. Adding photoprotectants in oily formulations of M. anisopliae protects against the harmful effects of UV radiation contributing to the fungus efficiency in the field.

Neo Heliopan® BB a 1 e 2% e Neo Heliopan® AV a 0,5% incrementaram a germinação.

ABSTRACT

Summary This narrative review of the medical literature assessed whether outdoor and indoor physical activity would increase the plasma levels of vitamin D. Synthesis of this liposoluble vitamin is mainly mediated by sunlight on the skin, where it is activated to perform its main action, which is to control the serum levels of calcium as soon as the element is absorbed in the intestines, assisting in the regulation of bone metabolism. Physical activity is any body movement that results in energy expenditure, while outdoor physical activity refers to physical activity carried out at public parks or other open spaces, as is the case of the popular practice of taking walks. Exercising outdoors would have both the benefits of physical activity and of sun exposure, namely the synthesis of vitamin D. However, according to the studies analyzed, increased plasma concentration of vitamin D occurs with physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
